About Your Host
The Krazy Canadian, Dan Davidoff,
Father, Husband, EXTREME SLEDDER…
I’ve grown up and lived in the West Kootenays of British Columbia for almost 30 yrs.. My father (Frank Davidoff) and I started exploring the Kootenays in the early 80’s.. Driving short track 340 Yamaha’s, spending 5 hrs and only getting half way up the mountain.. Each spring however, when the snow froze up , we’d travel all over the local ranges near Castlegar B.C.. Eventually we both owned Yamaha long tracked Phazers, and with 65 Hp, and much better floatation, we found new riding areas and more extreme country..
After grad in 1988, the party began, sledding was still an important part of my life, but so were drugs and alcohol..Working in the sawmill industry gave me enough money for both, but drugs and alcohol did eventually take over.. A great boss at Kalesnikoff Lumber gave me one chance, and then a second chance to get my life straightened out.. Two trys at re-hab, almost half a year! The second tour stuck, and I didn’t lose my job or all my toys.. Thanks Ken, I’m alive, clean and sober, for over 10 yrs now…
With all the extra money I wasn’t spending on drugs and drinking, I was able to buy my first full-mod 700 Mountain Max.. Gord Barrett, owner of Barrett Yamaha, Honda in Fruitvale B.C. , was also an owner of a full-mod 700 Mountain Max. The two of us found many amazing new play grounds. Areas once only accessable in spring were available almost all season..I’ll blame Gord for taking me to the next level of EXTREME SLEDDING. He also introduced me to Marc Fry, owner of Extreme Productions, and producer of the Extreme Teams first six movies. I only rode with Marc and the Extreme Team during filming of his last three productions, Gravity Meltdown, GM2 Road Trip, and GM3 Adrenaline Rush.. Unfortunately, while filming Adrenaline Rush , one of the last rides in June 2002. Marc died in the Norns, 40 feet away from the pick-up, he was washed over a huge waterfall during the record spring melt. He had a very young son, and a wonderful wife, and hundreds of very close buddies.. I lost my best friend. Jennifer, his wife, completed the movie.. Thank you Jen
I only sledded a few times the next season,, other Extreme Team riders did continue though. Mark, Josh, Shawn, and Don all did some Krazy stuff and conquered “The Monster” in Thunderstruck 2.. The next season , the “Rush” came back.. I went riding with Don, Mark, Shawn, Josh and a few others from the old Extreme Team.. Riding with these guys brought back the old desire to compete and get that Adrenaline Rush.. I had a blast riding again, and it was alot to do with riding with these good old friends.. Two weeks later Jim came up filming for Thunderstruck 3.. We all went back to Devils Hole, the desire was back , the passion was back.. I had such a great time riding with Jim, Trennis and the whole krazy bunch.
I’ve always admired the way Josh, Wayne, Don, Shawn and Norm rode. They’ve always had big iron and big ballz. The climbs they pulled back with the Extreme Team, back in Snow Extreme 1, 2 and 3..Amazing climbs, chutes and Mountains,, I admired while watching. Shawns segment in Thunderstruck 3 won him the award for best rider in a snowmobile movie. He pulled some amazing chutes and some have never been completed since.. These riders have all helped me gain confidence. Pushed me to the extreme levels we all strive for while filming.. I want to climb each and every krazy chute climbed in these movies, over the past 10 yrs. Chutes I thought were too dangerous or not possible 5 yrs ago, I now believe can be climbed in the proper snow conditions.. I want them all.
Riding lately with Brad, Randy, Mark, Wes, Shawn, Shain and really each and every Thunderstruck rider, pushes me.The challenge, the accomplishment, the “rush” , also push me.. Riding is like a drug though; the more you get , the more you want. Things that gave me an adrenaline rush 5 years ago, certainly don’t give me that same rush today.. I’ve sledded with hundreds of amazing riders. I know I’m not the best, but I try to be the best. The best I can with the sled I’m riding.
My daughter also loves riding . It’s changed my riding style a little.. When she goes riding with me , it changes a lot. When she gets excited at how beautiful the mountains look, the snow ghosts, the hoar frost, it refreshes me. It reminds me again of how beautiful these mountains are. After 25 years of riding and seeing these gorgeous cliffs and amazing scenic shots, I sometimes take it for granted. I enjoy taking my daughter up to the top of the mountains, as much as getting to the top, up through a tight narrow chute.
Being married to Andrea, and helping her raise Jessica and Nathan, has been fantastic. My daughter Aydia is 8 , Jess is 9 and Nathan is 11. I’ve gone from a single guy who gets his daughter every second weekend, to full time father and husband.. I love it, and I love them. I’ve never been happier or more satisfied. Serenity is much more common. Very seldom do I find myself feeling frustration or anger.
It was a huge honour to be named “snowmobiler of the year” at the 2007 Extremey awards. Jim put together a great segment in Thunderstruck 5. I was just the rider, he filmed, and edited. My segment in Thunderstruck 5 was awesome … Thanks Jim. And thanks to everyone who voted for me.
God has BLESSED me richly. Jesus is my saviour. I’m a greatfull recovering drug addict. I’m a little KRAZY, but aren’t we all???
